Primary health care is non-specialized outpatient care, which may involve the development of several less technological clinical activities. The work in this area involves multiprofessional teams and the pharmacist is in this team³.
The role of the pharmacist in primary care, began to emerge in the United States during the 1960s, this area was called Clinical Pharmacy. In this context, the pharmacist had the role of promoting care to patients who used drugs, promoting health and preventing diseases².
At the moment, the pharmacist's role in primary care is not limited to medication management, he is also directly involved with patient care. One of these roles is to promote the rational use of medicines, because their misuse can cause harmful reactions to the patient and waste of money for the health service¹.
In addition, the pharmacist also participates in health education and health prevention campaigns, which are important for improving the health and quality of life of citizens².
The role of the pharmacist in primary health care is gaining more and more notoriety, this is due to the recent creation of the Pharmaceutical Care area, where the pharmacist has more contact with the patient and participates more in the multidisciplinary team, also composed of doctors and nurses².
Despite this, the role of the pharmacist in primary care is still not so clear to other professionals in the multiprofessional team, because there are still few pharmacists who follow this area. The lack of clarity of the pharmaceutical performance is harmful, as it contributes to the lack of recognition and hinders the success of the cooperative work between the different professionals of the team¹.
