The pharmacist is a health professional who can perform different roles in society, due to his diverse graduation. The description of this specialist in the hospital area was given in Ordinance No. 4,283/2010, from the Ministry of Health.
In this document, the hospital pharmacy is described as a “clinical-assistance, technical and administrative unit, where activities related to Pharmaceutical Assistance are carried out, run exclusively by a pharmacist, composing the organizational structure of the hospital and functionally integrated with the other administrative and assistance units to the patient”[1].
Further in this article, it is emphasized that the Pharmaceutical Assistance is not restricted to the interaction between patient and pharmacist, but this theme encompasses all the logistics used from the production of the medication to the dispensation.
Consequently, multiple roles and responsibilities of a pharmacist can be found on the daily basis of this specialist in hospitals. these tasks can be divided into individual or collective, both will be evaluated below:
• Individuals: Orientation to the patient regarding the medication
used on its treatment, compounding[1], preparation of unit doses[1], handling antineoplastics and radiopharmaceuticals[1];
• Collective[1]: Guarantee the supply, dispensation, access, control, traceability, and rational use of medicines and other health technologies; ensure the development of clinical-care practices that allow monitoring the use of medicines and other health technologies; optimize the relationship between cost, benefit, and risk of assistive technologies and processes; develop pharmaceutical assistance actions, articulated and synchronized with institutional guidelines; and actively participate in the continuous improvement of health team practices.
Therefore, the responsibilities of the professional within the hospital area can be encompassed by 7 “rights”[2]: right patient, right dose, right route, right time, right drug with the right information and documentation. So, several skills are required, such as:
• Soft Skills;
• Good communication with patients;
• Good knowledge of compounding;
• Knowledge of current medication laws.
Accordingly, the hospital pharmacist has great importance in the recovery of patients, in a multidisciplinary team, and in the reduction of costs with medicines and health products.
