Ciprofloxacin and Leveofluxacin are in a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. They work by killing bacteria that cause infections. One of their major uses is in the treatment of streptococcus pneumonia.
Levofloxacin has a broad spectrum of activity against several causative bacterial pathogens of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and can be used as a monotherapy.
Ciprofloxacin orally every 12 hours for 3-6 days followed by 500 mg of oral medication twice daily for 4-7 days (mean, 4.8 days) was detected to be a successful treatment for pneumonia. It has no superinfections or resistance.
For that, studies were conducted to detect which one is better for streptococcus pneumonia. In 2003, a comparative study was done to evaluate the most appropriate medication for penicillin-susceptible and non-susceptible strains of streptococcus pneumonia. For that a regimen of levofloxacin (500 mg) and ciprofloxacin (500 mg), and a higher 750 mg levofloxacin against these strains. As a result, Levofloxacin regimens were more effective.
In another study, for 5-8 day treatment, levofloxacin had higher survival compared with ciprofloxacin.
